By now everyone acknowledges that American health care is broken. When there are many examples of working universal health care systems around the world, our politicians still hold to the mantra "our health care is the best in the world" even when 46 million of us go uninsured and the majority of bankruptcies have a major element of health care debt; some even claim that health care is a privilege and those who go without have chosen to do so. Let's agree - first of all - that NOBODY makes that choice. The system CAN be fixed - the models are out there, and there are excellent solutions developed within this country. We KNOW how to do this. But there is a wide gap from here to there. We have to stop talking to ourselves and get the message out to the unconvinced. We have to have working strategies to make a revolutionary change in our social structure to embrace universal healthcare. Is it a fundamental right? Let's talk about creating a true mass movement. Let's talk about the political process and how to prevail without being tied up and sold out in pragmatism and dealmaking... much less corruption and the issue of which officeholder is in whose pocket. If America is to survive as a country worth our children living in, it is time for this social revolution to move forward - but it will drag a LOT of issues with it. Let's stop talking about WHAT we need.... and let's stop DREAMING about it. LET'S MAKE IT REAL. Let us debate the political, ethical, economic, and moral solutions and find the mass political will to make it real - without compromise.
